I was going over my own personal list of films I want to see on R1 DVD, and I was amazed at just how many classic films out there still don't have a proper DVD release. A lot of horror & cult titles especially, but quite a few mainstream movies too. Here are some of the titles that I'm hoping will see the light of day:

Curtains (1983) - classic 80's slasher flick, this one is Canadian I believe.

Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (1964) - the 2nd entry in Hammer's mummy trilogy (the first being 1959's The Mummy, and the third being 1967's The Mummy's Shroud, both of which have been out on DVD for a long time).

Alligator (1980) - classic 80's "killer animal" movie, directed by Lewis Teague. (also in need of a DVD release is the sequel, Alligator II: The Mutation).

Animal World (1956) - a nature documentary directed by Irwin Allen, featuring a segment by FX legend Ray Harryhausen.

The 27th Day (1957) - 50's science fiction film, again featuring FX by Ray Harryhausen.

Amazing Shocking Asia (1998) - nasty shockumentary along similar lines as Mondo Cane and Faces of Death.

Battle Royale (2000) - there are several DVDs of this movie out there already, but we really need an "official" R1 release.

Black Past (1989) - obscure, low-budget German horror flick.

Blood Beach (1981) - cheesy 80's horror.... can't get enough of that on DVD, am I right? wink.gif

Beyond the Limits (2003) - more gory German horror, from the same director as Black Past.

Cat in the Brain (1990) - this gory Lucio Fulci flick has been in production limbo for what seems like forever.... get your act together, Image Entertainment! angry.gif

Cruising (1980) - crime drama directed by William Friedkin, starring Al Pacino.

The Cure for Insomnia (1987) - it'll probably never happen, but I'm including this on the list just because I think it would be interesting to see how they'd go about putting the longest film in history onto DVD. (How many discs do you think it would take for an 87-hour film?) huh.gif

La Gabbia (1985) - sleazy Italian drama, co-written by Lucio Fulci. (also known as Collector's Item and Dead Fright).

Deadly Mantis (1957) - another 50's "attack of the giant insect" B-movie. Gotta love these! biggrin.gif

Death Scenes (1989) - more sick, twisted footage of death and suffering for the Faces of Death crowd. (Followed by 2 sequels... maybe we could get a box set?) tongue.gif

Eddie Murphy: Delirious (1983) - we've already got Raw on DVD, why not this one too?

Ebola Syndrome (1996) - it would be great to have this gory Asian horror flick on DVD, but apparently the original uncut film no longer exists.... all existing prints are heavily censored.

Fantom Kiler (1998) - sleazy Polish horror flick about a serial killer stalking and murdering women. (followed by 2 sequels).

Faces of Gore (1999) - yet another Faces of Death clone for us sickos. tongue.gif (followed by 2 sequels).

From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga (1985) - excellent documentary about the original trilogy, narrated by Mark Hamill himself.... a definite must-see for Star Wars fanatics.

Godzilla 1985 (1984) - one of the last few Godzilla films that's still missing in action on DVD.

Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989) - another Godzilla film that needs a DVD release.

The Giant Behemoth (1959) - more 50's giant monster sci-fi. Cheesy but I love it! biggrin.gif

Howling VII: New Moon Rising (1995) - this is the only entry in the Howling series not yet on DVD in R1.

Island of the Fishmen (1979) - Italian horror film directed by Sergio Martino, which featured the immortal tagline: "You will actually see someone turned inside out!" (but you never do). tongue.gif

Ilsa, Tigress of Siberia (1977) - this is the only entry in the Ilsa series that's not yet on DVD. (Dyanne Thorne has such a great set of.... uhh.... eyes) wink.gif

Ken Park (2002) - Larry Clark's drama has several DVD editions released in other countries, but none yet for us North American folk.

Jaws: The Revenge (1987) - yes, I know, it's already got a R1 release.... but I want the television version! (The one with the "ridiculous-but-not-quite-as-ridiculous-as-the-theatrical-version" ending.) wink.gif

Let It Be (1970) - someone needs to do the world a favour and get this classic Beatles film on DVD, and soon!!

Lucker the Necrophagus (1986) - cult horror flick from Belgium.

The Lawnmower Man (1992) - again, yes I know this is technically already on DVD, but it's only the theatrical version.... I want the full 140 minute director's cut! (It's totally inexcusable that the current DVD isn't the director's cut... I even had it on VHS, so it's not like they couldn't transfer it over to disc). angry.gif

Men Behind the Sun 2 (1992) - also known as Laboratory of the Devil and Unit 731, it's the sequel to the nasty Asian horror film.

Mothra (1961) - the first film to feature the infamous Mothra, who would later go on to co-star in several of the Godzilla series, and 3 sequels of its very own (Rebirth of Mothra 1, 2, and 3).

My Life for Ireland (1941) - controversial Nazi propaganda fillm, made infamous for including actual footage of several actors accidentally being killed by live land mines.

Night of the Ghoul (1975) - British horror film starring Peter Cushing and John Hurt, directed by Freddie Francis.

One Million B.C. (1940) - a prehistoric adventure, later remade as One Million Years B.C. with Raquel Welch.

The Old Gun (1975) - I don't even remember why this drama/war film is on my list... someone must have recommended it to me at some point. tongue.gif

Pink Floyd: Delicate Sound of Thunder (1988) - now that we've finally got the Pulse concert on DVD, it would be nice to have this classic concert too!

Quatermass Xperiment (1955) - the first of 4 entries in Hammer's Quatermass series. (it was followed by 1957's Quatermass 2 and 1967's Quatermass and the Pit, both of which are already available on DVD).

Quatermass Conclusion (1979) - as the title implies, this is the last entry in Hammer's Quatermass quadrilogy. Give us Parts 1 & 4 so we can complete the series!

Return of the Living Dead Part 3 (1993) - although it technically is already available on DVD, it's in desperate need of a re-release, as the current DVD is edited to the point of butchery.

Rituals (1977) - an obscure Canadian slasher flick, set in the wilderness.

Shadow Conspiracy (1997) - there was a DVD release planned for this George Cosmatos thriller, but for some reason it was cancelled. It's got Charlie Sheen, Donald Sutherland, and Linda Hamilton! tongue.gif

Terror in the Aisles (1984) - a classic horror documentary featuring clips from over 75 horror and sci-fi movies.

Through the Looking Glass (1976) - a strange mix of adult hardcore, drama, and horror.

Thundercrack (1975) - another bizarre combination of horror and hardcore.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown - fairly obscure mystery/horror/thriller.

Threads (1984) - an extremely disturbing and chilling film about nuclear war. I remember being shown it in class in highschool, and it creeped me out. Probably the most frightening nuclear war film next to The Day After.

Traces of Death (1993) - you guessed it, another Faces of Death clone.... 5 films in this particular series. (There is technically already a DVD set of these films, but it's so rare and obscure that it might as well not exist). tongue.gif

Video Dead (1987) - classic 80's zombie flick... I think it's safe to say that you can never have too many of these on DVD. wink.gif

Wild Beasts (1984) - Italian "animals gone crazy" horror film set inside a zoo.... directed by one of the dudes who did the Mondo Cane series.

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970) - British sci-fi fantasy adventure, directed by Val Guest.

EDIT:
Plus there are these bunch of DVDs that seem to be in production limbo..... they've been listed in the database as "not announced" for ages and ages!! Why don't these companies get off their arses and release these DVDs already??

Jayson
Many of them are on spectacular DVD editions already, no guarantee if US releases appear they'll be the best releases. Biggest incentive for tracking down a region free player for the price a few $20 DVDs... wink.gif

In the theatrical version, when the shark is impaled on the broken mast of the boat, it blows up for some strange reason, and then sinks to the bottom. And the black guy who got eaten just a few minutes earlier reappears, badly wounded but very much alive. A completely ludicrous climax. Unfortunately this is the one we're stuck with on DVD.

In the television version, when the shark is impaled on the broken mast, instead of blowing up, it just gets impaled and spurts blood before sinking to the bottom. And the black guy doesn't reappear, implying that he is, in fact, dead after being eaten. A slightly more realistic climax than the theatrical crapfest.

wink.gif
Mark (malars)
Are you referring to Mario Van Peebles as "the black guy" or was there another one that I'm not aware of?
Rocker
Yeah, it was Mario Van Peebles.... playing the role of "Jake". smile.gif
Lesley (sprouticus)
hahaha! i had no idea that the theatrical version had him reappear.

What was so special about the Star Wars doc? And where did you see it?
Lesley (sprouticus)
most likely you won't see a release of the star wars doc...we got empire of dreams in the box set and from the sounds of it...it covers all the same ground.

but, i've been wrong before.

I saw the video for this on VH1 Classics none too long ago, and it brought back memories. An early Virginia Madsen film. Funny film. I think Human League did the soundtrack.

I've had it on VHS for as long as I can remember.... it's only an hour long but it includes a lot of really interesting behind-the-scenes footage that I've never seen anywhere else before, or since. If you're a Star Wars fan, it's quite enjoyable. smile.gif

Actually, it was Phillip Oakey with Giorgio Moroder who did that song, with Culture Club, Heaven 17, Jeff Lynne, and P.P. Arnold contributing songs as well. Good soundtrack for an excellent movie.
Rocker
Another important one I forgot to add to that list.....

My Bloody Valentine - We need an uncut DVD of this slasher classic!!

I Come in Peace (1990)

I could have sworn there was already a R1 release for this one, but apparently I was wrong. tongue.gif

Maybe they think it's an insult to Paul McCartney's image to release it, since he comes across as a slavedriver...

Lunatics: A Love Story
Clare (blackbird)
I had never heard of My Life for Ireland, it is disgusting that my country's name is involved with Nazi propaganda and it's even more disgusting that Ireland remained neutral during World War Two enabling this to happen. cry.gif A real blot on my country's history

Dogs in Space (1980s Australian film about punk rock starring Michael Hutchence) needs a good region 2 release - the copy floating about is by all accounts crappy.

Don't Deliver Us from Evil needs a Region 2 release as well, I have been waiting for years to see this film and none of the tvs in my house are NTSC compatible! fit.gif
Michael (Sully14)
Dirty Ho, El Topo, and Night of the Comet.

Have you tried an Apex DVD player? I play PAL discs on an NTSC TV all the time with it. I can't be certain it works in reverse, since I don't have a PAL TV.
Jordan (LoathedVermin72)
La haine needs an R1 release.
Brad (the rogue storm)
The Magnificent Ambersons needs an R1 release, as does Ace in the Hole. Also The African Queen, and Boomerang, to a lesser degree.

There was a small window where you could have got Boomerang. I actually have 2 of them right now. I need to sell one.
Brad (the rogue storm)
Supposedly it's going to be released under the Fox Film Noir line but it's delayed.

I'm talking about the 1947 Elia Kazan Boomerang, by the way.

That's what Sully14 was referring to, I believe. The Fox Film Noir DVD was released VERY briefly before being recalled or something. I know Charlie grabbed it.

Ah. That sucks. cry.gif
Jordan (LoathedVermin72)
Don't worry, it's one of Kazan's weaker efforts anyway. Good, but not great.
Dave (IndiePunk)
Roy Del Ruth's Blonde Crazy would be something to see.

And of Course, George Steven's Damsel in Distress.
Mark (Sgt.Rock)
Viva Zapata!
The Strawberry Blonde
Captain From Castile
The Big Steal (1949)
Ride the Pink Horse (1947)
El Cid
A Fistful of Dynamite (R1)
Jordan (LoathedVermin72)
Cannabis needs a release.

That is pretty much the top of my wish list, and I repeat that fact to the point of annoyance. I also got Boomerang when it was almost released previously. I would add The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I thought that when the planned remake was released, the 1947 version would get a DVD. But the remake seems to be stalled in preproduction.

No release date yet, though.

Zapped! (1982) - Starring the one and only Scott Baio as a teenerder who accidently gains the powers of telekinesis.. or as I like to call it, the power to burst open girl's bras! Oh yeah baby.

The Invisible Maniac (1990) - Escape Lunatic/Physics Professor/Sexually Repressed/Victim of Abusive Mother creates an invisiblity formula and completely pervs out at the young women he teaches. But when his serum wears off, he's humiliated to the point where he must KILL THEM! Oh yeah baby.

Starring Melissa Moore(who I had become infatuated with)[and who also now still acts as well as breeds horses!? - I don't know]...

This is the kind of garbage I was watching at 3AM when I was fourteen. And even though we had Cinemax, HBO and Showtime back in the day, these were on VHS! Yeah, this is the kind of stuff my family would tape off the tube. Was I suppose to come up on these tapes? Well, they probably should have hidden them better I guess. But I can't recall them hiding them at all(they only did that with the straight up porn). I have been corrupted, and it's my family's fault. Not that I mind.
